In 2008, a small group of volunteers found themselves wanting to beautify an unused lot at the Stanthorpe Railway Precinct.
While providing work experience opportunities for people wanting to enter the workforce, the gardens transformed from abandoned and weed infested into a thriving heritage and community garden.
The vision was to restore the old Railway Station gardens and so began Whistle Stop Heritage Garden. In 2011, a community garden was added as the two gardens joined forces and became the Whistle Stop Heritage and Community Garden.
Over the years various grants, lots of plant sales, and literally thousands of volunteer hours have added tanks, tools, a hot house, potting area, worm farms, wicking beds, a pergola and all the many things needed for a working garden.
Today the garden is an attractive and thriving community resource, providing for locals and tourists alike. Whistle Stop Garden has diversified to make a beautiful space more resilient and self-sufficient for a long time to come.
Whistle Stop Garden comprises our heritage (ornamentals), productive (veggie) and native gardens.
You are invited to learn, grow and play through the magical gifts of gardening, in our safe and welcoming space.
The heritage garden has been planted to remember the history of the gardens on this site, those of the original station master of the Stanthorpe Railway Station.
We have planted and maintained the plants which were said to have grown in this garden since its inception.
Explore our gardens which contain veggie growing beds, native plants, culinary and medicinal herbs and fruit trees.
We are always trying new things and learning how to support our growing in the unique micro-climate offered in our Granite Belt location.
Explore our new Totems of Hope walk around the garden and enjoy the creative explorations of the Happy Potters.
Whistle Stop and our Volunteer Community acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we create, grow, meet, learn and trade. The Githabul and Kambuwal peoples.
We respect their Elders past, present and emerging, recognising a continuous connection to Land, Sea, Sky, Culture, Language and Country for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples throughout Australia.
